Following an announcement from Toyota Motor Corporation, Toyota New Zealand is recalling certain RAV4 and Yaris models manufactured between 2002 and 2004.
Toyota New Zealand General Manager Customer Services Spencer Morris says the vehicles affected are only certain Yaris and RAV4 models manufactured between 2002 and 2004. The recall does affect both vehicles sold as new and vehicles imported by third parties and sold used in New Zealand.
Mr Morris says that Toyota will upgrade the affected driver’s side airbag in all affected vehicles, regardless of the importer or sales agent.
“In every case, the remedy is provided free of charge and at minimal inconvenience to our customers. The required upgrade will take less than one hour, and will be carried out at a customer’s most convenient dealership at a time that best suits them.”
The affected vehicles are equipped with driver’s side airbags that may have had their inflators affected by moisture at the manufacturing plant. There is a small chance these airbags could deploy abnormally in the event of a collision, potentially causing the inflator body to rupture and creating fragments that could injure an occupant.
Toyota understands that only these vehicles are affected, as these were fitted with airbags supplied from a specific plant at a specific time when humidity was later identified as an issue. The other airbags in these vehicles were sourced from a different plant and are not affected.
Toyota New Zealand will write to each affected owner, and provide the replacement parts and fitting required free of charge. Anyone immediately concerned about their vehicle can contact Toyota New Zealand on 0800 TOYOTA or contact their dealer.
