With the arrival of the all new Corolla sedan range, Kiwis can choose a Corolla body style and specification to suit every need.
That’s a grand total of 11 different models from the redesigned 11th generation of the world’s best selling car. The four sedan variants, include a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) versions on the GX grade, the value for money mid-range GLX and premium grade ZR, join five sporty Corolla hatchback variants and two practical Corolla wagons.
“The redesigned Corolla range has already made its mark in New Zealand, but there’s still much more to come,” says Toyota New Zealand’s General Manager of Product Planning, Neeraj Lala.
“More than 7500 hatchbacks and 1200 wagons have already been sold since the new generation line-up arrived last year. With the addition of the spacious, fantastically specified new sedan line-up, Corolla’s reign as New Zealand’s most popular nameplate looks set to continue.”
The new Corolla’s external design reflects a refreshed, modern style, with sedan, hatch and wagon all unified by a wider stance, lower, sportier bonnet line and headlights connected by a signature chrome-plated strip across the width of the nose. Strong accent lines that run the full length of each model show the shared design DNA.
A mix of Halogen, LED and HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlight and fog light systems are available across the range, along with LED Daytime Running Lights on the new Corolla ZR sedan.
In addition to redesigned exterior detailing, all 11th generation Corollas showcase high quality interiors that improve on both passenger space and cargo capacity and feature increased specification.
Safety and convenience items like Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming with Voice Recognition, reversing cameras and intuitive 6.1” liquid crystal touchscreen display audio systems are available on almost every model.
The premium grade Corolla Levin SX hatchback adds sporty features like 17” alloy wheels, sports style seats and paddle shift controls, while Corolla Levin ZR hatchback and ZR sedan arrive with standard features befitting their top model status: genuine leather seat facings and soft touch leather like trim finishes, climate control air conditioning and smart keyless entry and start systems.
The Corolla Levin ZR hatchback features auto-retracting and heated side mirrors and gives owners the option of a panoramic glass roof, while the new Corolla ZR sedan boasts a satellite navigation system with SUNA traffic channel as standard.
Corolla hatchback and sedan variants feature powerful 1.8-litre four cylinder 16 valve Double Overhead Cam (DOHC) petrol engines with Dual Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i). Offering up peak power of 103kW and 173Nm of torque, this powerful engine is matched with the choice of a six-speed manual gearbox in the Corolla GX sedan and hatch, or a seven speed Continuously Variable Transmission in all other sedan and hatch grades
The CVT transmission features a 7-Speed Sport Sequential Manual Mode, Sport Mode (hatch only), Acceleration and Deceleration Timing Control, Uphill and Downhill Shift Control and Flex Lock-Up Control, and helps achieve a combined fuel economy of 6.6-litres/100km on sedans and hatches.
The Corolla wagon, meanwhile, features an efficient 1.5-litre four cylinder 16 valve DOHC petrol engine with VVT-i. This provides 80kW peak power and 138Nm of torque (with the five-speed manual transmission), but remains an efficient operator, recording 5.6-litres/100km fuel economy and 132g/km C02 emissions. The CVT transmission variant produces 80kW of power and 136Nm of torque, while achieving fuel consumption of 5.1- litres/100km and 118g/km C02 emissions.
Although the practical load carrying capabilities of the Corolla wagon (with a maximum 875 litres of storage available) are well known, the other Corolla body styles hold their own with dimensions that work wonders for business and private buyers alike. The Corolla hatchback range has a 360 litre luggage capacity with its rear seats in place and the newly launched Corolla sedan also boasts fantastic cargo space; a full 470 litre luggage capacity which equates to four full-size golf bags.
In all iterations, the 11th generation Corolla carries on the model’s traditional role as an ideal mid-size family car, with ISOFIX child seat brackets, tether anchor points and child locks on the rear doors. All Corollas boast three-point ELR seatbelts in all seating positions and a comprehensive suite of airbags including a driver’s front, front passenger’s, driver’s knee airbag, driver and front passenger seat side and full cabin curtain shield airbags.
A raft of active safety measures are featured as standard across the range, including Anti-lock Braking (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC). The new Corolla sedan has achieved the maximum rating from EURO NCAP and Australia’s New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP).
The full range of modern, spacious and technologically advanced Corolla models, including the all new sedan line-up, is available now at Toyota dealers nationwide.
