With its leading-edge new Land Cruiser diesel engine under the bonnet, the Hilux has improved torque and more responsive power than ever. And the tried and trusted V6 petrol is still available too.
To make the most of the new engine there’s a new 6-speed manual transmission on selected models – or you can go for the 6-speed automatic option if that’s your preference. There’s also a 5-speed manual transmission available on select 2WD models.
The transmission has a solid yet smooth feel to it when you shift gears while a shotened gear lever offers more responsive gear changing.
Overall, its a quiet, smooth powertrain, and when you put your foot down you know about it – because there’s very little turbo lag.
Despite all that power, the Hilux manages to have a lower fuel consumption than ever, and meets the strict EURO 5 emission standards.
Towing
Then there’s towing. The 4WD SR5 manual can accommodate 3.5 tonnes – more than enough to pull a boat, horse float or fuel trailer.
But towing power is useless without stopping power, which is where the All New Hilux really comes into its own, thanks to newly tuned brakes that will bring you to a safe halt, even if the tray is loaded up and you have a cabin full of passengers.
