The finely-tuned seven seat Fortuner offers a mid-size diesel SUV set to tackle the demands of families and business owners alike with unprecedented safety, style and 4WD capability for 2016.
With SUV sales making up an increasingly large segment of the new vehicle market where sales in 2015 were up over 20 percent on 2014, the Fortuner joins the now six model Toyota SUV offering alongside the RAV4, Highlander, Land Cruiser FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser Prado and Land Cruiser 200 series.
Toyota believes the Fortuner is ideally positioned to appeal to those seeking a purpose-built and contemporary SUV and is expected to sell between 600 and 700 Fortuner’s in 2016.
“It’s well positioned to provide us with an incremental sales opportunity, especially with private buyers,” said Steve Prangnell, Toyota New Zealand’s General Manager of Sales.
The Fortuner range offers three grades; GX, GXL and Limited, all powered by the advanced 2.8-litre diesel engine launched in the award winning Land Cruiser Prado and all new Hilux at the end of 2015. There are three drives modes, ECO, NORMAL and POWER and an easy to use 4WD selector with the options of high range 2WD and 4WD or low range 4WD for when you need to alternate from the ultimate urban transporter through to an adventure machine.
The GX grade features a six-speed manual transmission with Intelligent-Manual Transmission (i-MT), a system which uses sensors to automatically regulate the engine revs to the optimum level during gear changes, and GX, GXL and Limited grades feature a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifts.
Inside the Fortuner cabin there are refined finishing’s and carefully considered features throughout, delivering high levels of usability and convenience. Space and comfort are prevalent with seven full size seats to accommodate the family with the third row easily folding out of the way.
Inspired by the iconic Toyota Hilux, Fortuner arrives with a proven 4WD heritage renowned to tackle even the harshest off-road conditions. With its coil spring suspension and rear differential lock, the Fortuner is equally at home around town or on the most remote high country track.
It shares the Hilux’s double wishbone suspension in the front and the four link rear suspension with a lateral control rod for optimum durability, handling, stability and ride comfort.
“It’s a true off roader with its low range transmission and separate chassis,” said Spencer Morris, Toyota New Zealand’s General Manager of Product.
Although derived from the Hilux, only the bonnet and front doors are carried over. The Fortuner has unique design cues which clearly distinguish it from its Hilux cousin, including sharp and sculptured exterior lines, slender headlamps and underbody protection.
A robust high body position and a chiselled front command attention, while a chrome beltline can be found on the GXL and Limited grades further accentuating the Fortuner’s modern toughness.
As we have come to expect from the newly developed Toyota 1GD-FTV engine, the Fortuner delivers on power and torque without compromising on fuel efficiency.
The engine produces 130kWs and 450Nm of torque between 1600 and 2400rpm in automatic and the GX manual version has 420Nm from a lower 1400rpm up to 2600rpm. The manual has a combined fuel consumption of 7.8L/100kms and the automatic at 8.6L/100kms.
There is a braked tow rating of 2.8 tonnes for the automatic models and three tonnes for the manual, all are fitted with trailer sway control making it an ideal vehicle for towing the boat, caravan or trailer. If the vehicle becomes unsettled by crosswinds, bumpy roads or sudden turns, the appropriate brake is applied to help bring the trailer and Fortuner back into line.
The active traction control electronics were fine tuned in Australia for local conditions including gravel roads. The electronics can be turned off for specific off road conditions such as mud, sand or snow.
The Fortuner boasts reassuring confidence with comprehensive safety appealing to families and business owners.
The active safety package includes a reversing camera with backing monitor and rear clearance sensors, vehicle stability control, hill-start assist and downhill assist control, anti-locking four wheel disc brakes with brake assist and electronic brake force distribution and an emergency brake signal. There are seven air bags and a 2015 ANCAP five star safety rating.
Intelligent features are extensive throughout including a 7” touch screen display audio system with voice recognition and steering wheel controls. It offers the latest in mobility for AUX/USB and Bluetooth functions and extends to include Satellite Navigation, SUNA traffic control and Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB) for the GXL and Limited variants.
A 4.2” Multi Information Display (MID) provides a broad range of important trip and vehicle information that can be easily switched between displays to view the outside temperature, average fuel consumption levels, the available fuel range, driving mode and more.
And for those warmer days, an air conditioned cooler box conveniently placed just above the glove box uses refrigerated air to keep two 600ml drinks cool in a special compartment, or alternatively can be used to keep its contents warm on colder days
For GXL and Limited variants, a powered back door can be opened and closed without the driver needing to leave their seat. It can also be controlled from the rear of the car and a memory function allows you to set and control just how far up it opens, making it perfect when you're parked in areas with lower clearance.
Fortuner GX models feature an engine immobiliser and horn alarm, smart key and smart start, cruise control, tilt and telescopic steering column with a leather and wood steering wheel design, manual air conditioning with a rear cooler, 2x ISOFIX attachment points and 3x top tether child restraint anchors, automatic bi-halogen headlamps with manual levelling, front fog lamps, a large rear spoiler with shark fin antenna, roof rails, rear privacy glass and sits proudly on 17” alloy wheels.
