Toyota Prius Park Brake Cable recall confirmed for New Zealand

Toyota New Zealand is recalling a small number of Prius models due to a concern with the park brake cable.

At the time of the global announcement no New Zealand new Prius were identified as being involved. However, this has since been extended to include 104 New Zealand new models manufactured between November 2015 and September 2016 as a precautionary measure.

The subject vehicles are equipped with a foot-operated park brake cable which over time is believed to become less disengaged ultimately rendering the parking brake inoperative in worst cases. If the concern exists and the parking brake does not engage while the transmission is left on and in gear (other than ‘Park’), the vehicle could roll away and increase the risks associated with unintended mobility.

Though there have been no reported incidents of this fault occurring in New Zealand, owners of the vehicles - which are traceable through registration data - will be contacted by Toyota New Zealand.

The remedy will be completed free of charge by Toyota dealerships and is expected to take approximately 0.5 hours.

There are more than 344,000 vehicles involved worldwide with investigation still ongoing to determine whether there are any used imports in New Zealand affected.
