For a significantly improved game of cricket next summer, you will need to invest in the right gear. Laver & Wood is a small, Napier-based business specialising in handmade, customised cricket bats, using their bat selection forms, knowledge, experience and expertise to refine a bat to your exact game.
Laver & Wood aim to give you the best value, empower you to play your natural game with ease, score more runs, and ultimately continue to fuel your passion for cricket. James Laver, professional bat maker and Managing Director of Laver & Wood, has personally crafted over 30,000 bats in his lifetime, meaning he is well-versed in creating products for cricketers of any level – from club to professional.
In the early months of 2020, the team at Laver & Wood were thrown into uncertainty when Covid-19 social distancing and lockdown measures came into play, cancelling all sports games. Sales of their custom-made cricket bats stopped almost entirely, as Kiwis hunkered down at home and stopped playing team sports. Thankfully, the government wage subsidy gave Laver & Wood time to change tack with their promotional focus, allowing some business to tick over. Despite this, the businesses’ sales are over 50% down on where they would be any other year.
Before becoming recipients of a Toyota Highlander through Toyota’s small business driver scheme, Laver & Wood were reliant on a 2007 Ford Focus with over 380,000 kilometres on the clock. Needless to say, the Toyota Highlander’s spacious interior and reliability has been a welcome change for the Laver & Wood team, allowing them to travel to cricket games throughout New Zealand to grow interest in their custom-made cricket bats.
Whether you are a keen cricketer, still finding your feet with the game, or are wanting to buy a meaningful present for a cricketer in your life, Laver & Wood have the knowledge, experience and craftmanship to design a bat to suit any requirement.
