Small Business Driver: White Chapel Jak
Take one energetic vocalist with a passion for entertaining, a charming classical guitar player, a smooth double bassist and a highly versatile percussionist, and you’re left with the unique cover band experience that is White Chapel Jak - composed of Bonnie, Nathan, Dean and Michael.
Performing up to 150 shows per annum for the last five years, White Chapel Jak have quickly earned a reputation for themselves in bars, pubs and events across the country, from the upper North right down to South Island locations. Delivering a fresh acoustic approach to the songs we all know and love, White Chapel Jak’s live energy is rhythmic, fun, engaging, and distinctly ‘kiwiana’.
White Chapel Jak are New Zealand’s reigning Wedding Band of the Year, won Radio New Zealand’s “Battle of the Covers” competition, have opened for many international acts including Alanis Morrisette and Ben Harper, and have performed at festivals across the country. Prior to the first Level 4 lockdown, White Chapel Jak were regularly selling out their ticketed shows across the North Island, with tour dates, corporate functions, private events and weddings lined up as far as the eye could see.
The pandemic saw White Chapel Jak lose 100% of their business through Alert Levels 2-4, since all events on their calendar had more than 100 people in attendance. Having to refund touring shows, weddings and corporate functions of their deposits (or providing full refunds) was an added financial hit.
Since moving back into Level 1, the band have resumed some of their shows and had a successful summer period - although the volatile Covid-19 landscape means the music industry is continuously braced for impact. Receiving a Toyota Highlander through Toyota’s Small Business Driver initiative has been a huge morale booster for White Chapel Jak, as travel is one of their largest overhead costs. The Mediaworks advertising package has also been immensely helpful in the band’s endeavour to reach new audiences.
