Ninth Generation Toyota Camry The Most Powerful Ever

ninth-generation-toyota-camry-the-most-powerful-ever

The category-leading Toyota Camry has entered its ninth generation with the 2024 model receiving a styling overhaul, a redesigned interior cabin and the fifth generation, and most efficient, hybrid system in the Toyota fleet.

While maintaining the recognisable Camry silhouette, the new Camry is more premium and refined than ever. Leading from the front, the sedan continues the recent Toyota design language with a sharp blade between the C-shaped front lights and a new front grill promoting a wide stance and sleek profile.

Although much has been written of the demise of the ‘saloon’, the Camry offers customers the familiar spaciousness of the cabin, combined with affordability and impressive fuel efficiency with superior ride and handling. Yes, SUVs offer ride height and storage, but the Camry is also roomy for rear seat passengers and the wide and deep boot offers plenty of secure luggage space.

There will be three grades available in New Zealand: GX, SX and ZR, and all grades are front wheel drive. Under the sleekly curving bonnet is a 2.5L petrol engine matched to the latest hybrid system, a Lithium-ion battery, front wheel drive and an e-CVT transmission. The most powerful Camry now boasts a total output at 170kW, a 10kW increase than the previous generation.

Andrew Davis, Vice President Mobility at Toyota New Zealand, says the Toyota Camry has been dominating the sedan market in New Zealand, and for a good reason.

“Camry really is the best of both worlds. It has the sleek, sporty look of a sedan, and offers exceptional handling and driving dynamics. Inside, it has the roominess of an SUV and with the lower centre of gravity matched to a hybrid system, it really is a pure thrill to drive. You feel like you’re one with the road. On top of all that, it delivers terrific fuel efficiency,” he says.

Andrew says the upgrades to Camry symbolise Toyota’s commitment to the sedan and its future. Available only with the hybrid powertrain, the new most powerful Camry yet will continue to offer a comfortable, extremely reliable and safe mid-sized passenger car for drivers for years to come.

Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions* have decreased from the previous generation. GX and SX grades now have a combined fuel consumption of 4.4L/100km and combined emissions of 101g/km. ZR has also reduced to a combined fuel consumption of 4.5L/100km and combined emissions of 103g/km.

Outward appearances between the three grades are minimal. The biggest clue being the more aggressive alloy wheel design, which shift from 17” silver metallic alloys on the GX and SX grades, to 18” black painted and machined finish alloy for the ZR grade. Exterior differences are in the lighting department. The SX adds LED front fog lights, multi-lens LED headlights and full LED rear tailgate lights. The ZR features a panoramic roof, rain sensing wipers and privacy rear and side glass.

Inside the Camry’s spacious interior there is plenty of room for adults to relax in the front and rear seats. Black and dark grey fabric seat material is standard in the GX and SX, while the ZR features black leather accented upholstery. The SX driver can adjust their seat eight ways using a powered switch and has a two-way power adjustable lumbar support. The ZR has the same powered driver seat, a power adjustable front passenger seat and front seat heating and ventilation.

The dashboard design is highlighted by a large ribbed trim piece that stretches from the passenger’s side the infotainment display. Between this trim and the seven-inch full colour meter is the infotainment display, eight inches in the GX, rising to 12.3” in the SX. The top grade ZR has a 12.3” colour meter, 12.3” audio display and Head-up Display.

Safety technology has come a long way since the first Camry models arrived in New Zealand. Customers of new vehicles now expect a suite of safety features as standard, and the 2024 Camry does not disappoint in that regard.

The latest iteration of Toyota Safety Sense is included in the Toyota Camry. It includes Pre-Collision System with vehicle, pedestrian, bicycle and motorcycle detection. Other safety features include Emergency Steering Assist, Intersection Collision Avoidance Support, Lane Tracing Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Emergency Driver Stop System.

The 2024 Toyota Camry is available in seven base shades, Glacier White, Silver Pearl, Precious Metal, Eclipse, Scarlet Flare, and two new shades, Polished Bronze and Deep Sea Blue. The SX and ZR are also available in Frosted White.

Andrew Davis says demonstration models of the Camry have been rolled out around the country to Toyota Stores and are waiting for test drivers seeking a thrilling drive. He also confirmed that stock has landed in New Zealand and is ready to be dispatched to Camry buyers.
