Driving sustainability through technology

At Toyota, we’ve been pioneers of fuel cell technology for more than 20 years. And we’re proud to have brought this innovative tech to the people through passenger vehicles, buses and even forklifts.

Globally, Toyota is investing in hydrogen technology as part of the next step in our journey to reduce carbon emissions. And in New Zealand, we have committed to being carbon neutral by 2050. To achieve this ambitious goal and help make NZ a better place, we are exploring sustainable new technology that goes far beyond just vehicles.

Sharing the Technology

In April, Toyota launched an exciting new car-sharing scheme driven by our hydrogen fuel cell technology using the Toyota Mirai. Along with eight other like-minded Kiwi companies, we’re looking to explore and bring to life all the amazing things this technology can do, all while lowering our carbon footprint.

So, if you see one of these innovative cars out and about on the roads of Auckland, you’re not just seeing an experiment. It’s a glimpse of an exciting sustainable future for New Zealand.

World leading innovation

Toyota has backed the incredible innovation that drives Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ) for more than three decades. And we’re continuing this partnership by supplying NZ’s winning team with a prototype of our hydrogen fuel cell system, providing the power behind their chase boat.

Partnering with ETNZ on this incredible project gives Toyota an avenue to discover all the exciting new ways we can use this carbon-neutral technology. If this is just the beginning, can you imagine the places this technology will take us?

Sustainable Energy? The answer is all around us.

Did you know that hydrogen is one of the most abundant elements in the universe? In fact, it makes up 70% of all matter. It’s remarkably clean, producing only water when powering a Fuel-Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) like the Toyota Mirai. And if made using renewable energy, it’s completely carbon-free.

Hydrogen is being seen as the planet’s future power source, and Toyota is leading the way. For example, we're funding Woven City, a community at the base of Mount Fuji that will be 100% powered by hydrogen. So watch this space.
