It makes sense that kids who spend time in nature will grow up wanting to preserve it. So Toyota and the Department of Conservation (DOC) have joined forces to create the Toyota Kiwi Guardians programme to help parents pry kids away from devices and into the great outdoors. There are kids adventures ready and waiting, from activities in the backyard to more epic adventures dotted up and down the country.
Olympic gold medalist, Dame Lisa Carrington, is right onboard with Toyota Kiwi Guardians. She says, “I love being out on the water with nature. It’s just me and the water and it’s just so peaceful. The oceans, the lakes and the rivers are really important to me, and if I can look after them now, it will help the next generation.”
An activity programme for kids to earn rewards for learning about nature, Toyota Kiwi Guardians helps kids to:
Each challenge has a different medal - so kids can be rewarded for their effort and have fun collecting them.
There are stacks of things tamariki can do without even leaving their own backyard. They can create a lizard lounge to attract skinks and geckos to the garden. They can plant seeds and help them grow. One activity involves keeping a nature journal, another will see your kids taking action against weeds. They can even make a birds-eye-view map of their backyard complete with a map key. Finish any of these challenges and your child will receive a medal in the post.
Once they’ve done one activity, kids get so excited they usually want to do more. Parents love it because it’s more time spent outside and less on the couch. After a couple of local local activities they'll be ready to explore further, so we've set up bigger adventures to be had all around New Zealand.
Up and down the country there are adventures waiting to be had, many just beyond your gate. Some of these adventures require a bit of parental buy-in, because kids will need help to get there. But as the adventures are scattered all around the country, there's often more than one within easy driving distance. You might end up visiting New Zealand’s oldest mine, exploring a goblin forest or taking an edible-plant walk. There are hidden spots with glorious vistas, waterfalls, bird sanctuaries and ancient legends. From limestone caverns to historic huts where you can stay overnight, Toyota Kiwi Guardians help tamariki connect to nature and build a passion that will last a lifetime.
Get your kids and whānau involved, explore and enjoy the outdoors, collect medals and build New Zealand’s green guardians of tomorrow. Find out more on the Toyota Kiwi Guardians website.
