After sharing the same chassis since May 1996, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and the Toyota Hilux Surf line merged to create the fourth-generation Prado. Principal mechanical components were unchanged, but new features included the crawl control system for facilitating off-road driving at very low speeds, and the multi-terrain select system that could optimize the drive settings for any off-road conditions.
The second-row seats move back and forth to adjust the legroom, and the left side seat automatically slid forward when the seatback was tilted forward, providing walk-in access to the third-row seats. The third-row seats could be automatically stowed or restored by a flick of a switch, and the floor in front of them was lowered by 50mm to enhance ride comfort and utility.
