Toyota AdBlue®
To help to contribute to a cleaner environment, some Toyota models use AdBlue® to help convert nitrogen oxide emissions in the exhaust of diesel engines, into harmless nitrogen and water.
What is AdBlue®?
It’s a non-toxic colourless solution of water and urea added to diesel exhaust to reduce air pollution.
AdBlue is a registered trademark of VDA Verband der Automobilindustrie e.V. It is also known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), ARLA 32 or AUS 32.
How does AdBlue® work?
The AdBlue® is heated in the exhaust system triggering a chemical reaction which converts the toxic nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water vapour.
What does AdBlue® do for a car?
It works to convert nitrogen oxide emissions in the exhaust gas into harmless nitrogen and water.
Where is the reservoir refill cap on the Land Cruiser Prado?
It is next to the diesel filler, behind the fuel filler flap. It is easily recognisable by its blue cap and is labelled ‘AdBlue®’. The tank is totally separate to the diesel tank.

Your vehicle will notify you a couple of thousand kilometres before refill is necessary.
For every 1,000 kilometres driven approximately 1 litre of AdBlue® is used, however depending on driving styles and environmental conditions this can vary. It's also important to know that the tank size of the AdBlue® reservoir varies on different cars.
Yes, simply unscrew the cap and pour in the AdBlue® solution, although we advise care and use of a clean funnel if filling from a large can or container.
All AdBlue® products meet specific standards, so it is essential that you do not use any other products as they could damage your vehicles Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system resulting in expensive repairs and warranty violations.
It will automatically shift into a reduced power mode so you can get home. It will not restart if the engine is turned off and the AdBlue® tank is empty.
Yes. The regular maintenance programme will include a check of AdBlue® and will top up the reservoir.
No. You can buy AdBlue® from retailers or pop into your local Toyota Store to purchase.
If you find that you have accidentally put diesel in your AdBlue® tank do not start your engine! Diesel contaminates AdBlue® and any contamination may cause costly damage to your SCR system. Call your local Toyota store and talk to them about resolving the issue.
Do not start or run your vehicle as this may cause damage to the vehicle and result in costly repairs. It is worth noting this will not be covered under the New Vehicle Warranty. Contact your local Toyota Store immediately for assistance.
Adblue® is not a hazardous substance. We strongly discourage you to ingest AdBlue® or inhale its vapour, due to the risk of an allergic reaction.
If AdBlue® is spilt during refilling, we recommend that it be cleaned off with a paper towel and washed with plenty of cold water.
