Drivers set blistering pace at Highlands
Any one of eight drivers or more could become the fastest driver ever around the Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell on Saturday afternoon when the first race of the 2019 Castrol Toyota Racing Series gets underway.
Eight drivers went well under the official lap record of 1:30.517 today in testing at the picturesque track, with Kiwi racer Marcus Armstrong fastest overall after three sessions clocking a blistering sub 1 minute 29 second lap.
Fellow Kiwi Liam Lawson, United States racer Cameron Das, Petr Ptacek from the Czech Republic, Asian F3 champion Raoul Hyman of Great Britain, Kiwi Brendon Leitch, Austrian Lucas Auer and Japan's Kazuto Kotaka all clocked sub 1 minute 30 laps during the day. Several other drivers were also inside the old lap record.
Qualifying for the first race of the championship - which this year rewards the top runners with Super Licence points that will help them on the road to Formula One - takes place on Saturday morning with the first race on Saturday afternoon. A further qualifying session and two races, including the feature race, take place on Sunday.
